The Near North District School Board with the assistance of Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic School Board and Nipissing University held another successful Junior Mathematics Contest for 85 Near North area secondary students on Friday December 14th. Students participated in mini lectures and worked in teams of 6 or 7 students to solve three different sets of problems.

Junior grade high school students were divided into teams, ensuring there was a mixture of participating schools in each group. The math contest gave area students with common interests the opportunity to meet and challenge each other in a post secondary environment. Students were encouraged to work together as a team.

Each student on the top three winning teams received a gift card from Tim Hortons: 1st place - $15.00, 2nd place - $10.00 and 3rd place - $5.00. In addition, all students received a Nipissing University T-shirt.

Candace Barry, Near North District Board’s Numeracy Coordinator, commented, “Today was an excellent opportunity to challenge our math students and further develop their problem solving skills in a team setting”.
