The North Bay Regional Science Fair committee (NBRSF) will proudly present CBC’s Quirks and Quarks Host, Bob McDonald on North Bay’s Capitol Centre stage at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m on February 19, 2008.

The event entitled Explore the Wonders of Science with Bob McDonald, to be presented jointly with Nipissing University, is intended as a fund raiser for the North Bay Regional Science Fair, which requires over $15,000 every year to host a regional fair and send its top five students on to the Canada-Wide Science Fair. The morning show is focused on inspiring our elementary students, while the afternoon show is geared to re-ignite a passion for science in our youth and adults.

Bob McDonald has been communicating science internationally through television, radio, print and live presentations for more than 30 years. He is the host of CBC Radio’s Quirks and Quarks, the award-winning science program with a national audience of nearly 500,000 people. He is also a regular reporter for CBC Television’s The National as well as host and writer of the Gemini-nominated children’s series Head’s Up.

As a print journalist, McDonald has authored two science books for children and contributed to numerous science textbooks, newspapers and magazines including The Globe and Mail, Owl Magazine and many others. His latest book is Measuring the Earth With a Stick.

McDonald has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of science in Canada; as the 2001 recipient of the Michael Smith Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the 2001 Sir Sanford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute, Canada’s oldest scientific institution; the 2005 recipient of The McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science, through The Royal Society of Canada. As well, he has received two honorary Doctorates, from the University of Guelph and Carleton University.
Over 500,000 Canadian students prepare to take part in local and regional science fairs during March and early April. The top students from these fairs will move on to compete in May, at the national championships, the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), to be held in Ottawa, Ontario.
The 45th Annual North Bay Regional Science Fair, wil be held Wednesday, April 2,2008, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., in the Canadore College gymnasium.

Tickets for the NBRSF fundraiser are $10 each and available at the Capitol Centre box office at 474-4747. Blocks of 25 tickets are available to schools by emailing [email protected].
