Gore Bay – Manitoulin OPP officers were called to assist Corrections Canada as they made an emergency landing at the Gore Bay airport on Wednesday 19 Dec 07 at 12:15 pm with inmates aboard.

A Corrections Canada transport plane carrying 12 high risk offenders and 14 Correction Officers had to make an emergency landing at the Gore Bay airport when one of the engines on their aircraft failed. The plane landed safely on the runway and island OPP officers attended to provide extra security for the inmates.

The inmates and guards were transferred to a heated empty school bus which was provided by A. J. Bus lines where they waited until another Corrections Canada airplane arrived. The inmates were loaded on the new plane and flew off to their destination.

Manitoulin OPP were happy to report there were no injuries or incidents to report as a result of this emergency landing, and at no time was there any risk to the public.
