Ottawa - On December 8, events will take place in at least 37 cities across Canada, and over 80 countries around the world, united by the demand: "Kyoto Now!" The December 8 day of action will likely be the largest day of climate protest in both Canadian and world history to date. This Saturday, while the 13th International Conference on Climate Change takes place in Bali, Indonesia, citizens around the world will mobilize to demonstrate their concern over the lack of global action on greenhouse gas emissions. On December 8 Canadians will demand that the federal government take real action on climate change and end its attempts to block international consensus at the Bali conference.

"On December 8, as representatives from countries around the world gather in Bali to begin the discussions about the fate of the Kyoto process, Canadians will gather to express their demand that Canada show leadership in meeting this crisis," says Dr. David Suzuki, who will be speaking at the December 8 demonstration in Vancouver. "It is in our own self interest to show leadership on reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and that is what grassroots groups are demanding."

Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, in a video issued by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, says that the protests on December 8 will be crucial to "get our government to change its dreadfully entrenched, wrongheaded position on climate change and our future."

The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition has emerged as an unprecedented alliance of environmental organizations, unions, students, and grassroots groups, representing 5 million Canadians, to facilitate the countrywide organizing for December 8th. The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition was formed in August 2005, two days before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans.
