The North Bay General Hospital Volunteer Association handed over a $100,000 cheque to the North Bay and District Hospital Foundation today, marking its sixth payment on a $1 million pledge to the Caring for Generations Campaign for the new hospital. The presentation took place during the December general meeting of the Association.

Association Treasurer Pierre Boileau says it is thanks to the hospital employees, patients and visitors that the Association is able to meet its pledge goal each year. “It is through the support of the Volunteer Tuck shops in the hospital, together with various fundraising efforts throughout the year that we are able to donate this money,” he noted.

Foundation Board Chair Grant Schultz, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Foundation, says they are grateful to receive the pledge payment from the association. “Half of their million dollar pledge is designated to bricks and mortar; half goes to medical equipment to meet today’s needs and in preparation for the move to the new hospital,” Schultz explained.

Three volunteers were also honoured for their achievements during today’s meeting. Volunteer Anna Amann was acknowledged for completing 20,000 hours of volunteering at NBGH and was presented with a bouquet from NBDH Foundation Executive Director Lois Krause. Diane Hunter and Rita Morel were presented with bouquets from NBGH President and CEO Mark Hurst, and NBGH Board Chair Alain Perron in recognition for receiving the award of Lifetime Member with the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario (HAAO). To become a lifetime member of HAAO, volunteers need to be an active and contributing member of one or more healthcare auxiliaries/associations for a minimum of 20 years.

Over 200 volunteers serve in 50 programs/services at the Hospital. Volunteers assist in patient and non-patient areas. Some of these areas are the Information Desk, Palliative Care, Emergency Department, Cancer Clinic, Ophthalmology and Orthopaedic Clinics. Volunteers provide service all week on days and evenings with the majority of the demand for services being Monday to Friday during the day.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact the hospital’s Volunteer Services Department at 474-8600 Ext. 4140.
