Nipissing University is pleased to welcome Inuit performers Siqiniup Qilauta to North Bay for a performance at the Capitol Centre’s Galaxy Circle Room on Tuesday, December 4 at 7 p.m.

The concert is presented by Routes and Rhythms, a collective of Nipissing University faculty and administration and local community members. Their mandate includes the promotion of cultural understanding and to further cooperation between the university and the community.

Siqiniup Qilauta performances include throat singing, drum dancing, singing traditional songs and Inuit games. The group likes to engage the audience, creating an interactive performance. They have been actively performing as a group since 2001 and have performed nationally and internationally at various festivals, gatherings and events. The name of the group, Siqiniup Qilauta roughly translates to The Sun’s Drum. The name was influenced by an Inuit legend they heard about the sun. When the sun has a complete halo around it, it indicates good luck and the halo is meant to be a drum.

The group will also perform and provide a music education workshop at the university on Wednesday, December 5, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Nipissing University theatre (F213) for education students and students in Nipissing’s Music and Culture course.

Tickets for the Capitol Centre performance are available from the WKP Kennedy Gallery. For the general public, the ticket price is $10. For students and WKP Kennedy Gallery members the cost is $8.
