North Bay Mayor Vic Fedeli launched a new morning series over breakfast in North Bay today. Over 50 VIP guests including mayors, business leaders and visionaries from throughout the region, attended the breakfast to discuss life and business in North Bay.

The inaugural Mayor’s Morning Series focused on the economic and social impact of Canadore College and Nipissing University on the North Bay Region.

“The two institutions have an enormous influence on the diversity, culture, and economy of North Bay and it is important that we acknowledge their contributions and highlight just how much of an impact they do have,” explained Mayor Fedeli.

Together these cornerstones of the community inject more than $200 million a year into the local economy through student and faculty spending and construction. The student population of the two schools accounts for 12 per cent of the total North Bay population. These factors play a central role in making North Bay one of the top 15 places to live in Canada according to a 2006 Money Sense Magazine poll.

“The continued growth and development of Canadore and Nipissing are essential to maintaining the vitality of our community,” Mayor Fedeli stated.

Barbara Taylor, President of Canadore College and Dennis Mock, President of Nipissing University both spoke of the roles their institutions play in the community. North Bay is unique in that it is one of the only communities in Canada to have a college and university that share not just a campus, but resources as well, including programs like nursing that actually see students from both institutions working together.

To further communicate the important role the institutions play, Scott Clark, President of Benjamin James Marketing Communications introduced the Community Campus Connection (3C), a diverse group of individuals and businesses who want to see the continued growth and public influence of both institutions.

“Over the years, Benjamin James has employed over 15 graduates from Canadore and Nipissing. As a grassroots organization, 3C welcomes any other businesses and organizations to join the group and to help showcase the valuable economic, cultural and social roles that Canadore College and Nipissing University play in our region,” Clark said.
