Minister Bryant to address Anishinabek Nation assembly

GARDEN RIVER FN - Guest Speaker Minister Michael Bryant will be at the Anishinabek Nation assembly in Garden River on Tuesday, November 27th.

As part the Anishinabek Nation's Era of Action campaign calling on the provincial government to start implementing recommendations of the Ipperwash Inquiry Report, Grand Council Chief John Beaucage will be with 2,000 postcards showing the support from a host of allies such as church groups, municipal leaders and education groups.

The Era of Action campaign was launched on June 29, 2007 as part of the National Day of Action. The postcards highlighted major recommendations of Commissioner Sidney Linden's two-year inquiry into the events that led to the Sept. 6, 1995 death of Anthony Dudley George during a land claim protest, including the creation of a Treaty Commission of Ontario.

Other topics of discussion at assembly will be the Anishinabek Nation's Economic Blueprint, the Anishinabek Nation Citizenship Law, and self government.

The Anishinabek Nation incorporated the Union of Ontario Indians as its secretariat in 1949. The UOI is a political advocate for 42 member First Nations across Ontario. The Union of Ontario Indians is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.
