Last lift will complete removal of illegal dam

On the heals of the last lift that will complete the removal of the illegally constructed Wasi Lake Dam, the Ministry of Natural Resources would like to remind the public that all dams must be authorized and approved under the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act (LRIA) prior to construction.

The LRIA regulates the location, design, construction and operation of dams in lakes and rivers in Ontario as well as the land beneath them. It provides for the protection of public rights, interests of riparian owners and ensures the protection of persons and property from flooding and erosion.

Penalties and enforcement provisions under the LRIA can range from fines of up to one million dollars and/or six months in jail and include repair and restoration orders.
