Speak out to end violence against women

The White Ribbon Campaign was created by a unique coalition of men who believe in the importance of educating other men, young men and youth about violence against women.

The White Ribbon Campaign was created by a unique coalition of men who believe in the importance of educating other men, young men and youth about violence against women.

The campaign, which functions on goodwill more than funding, is asking North Bay to get involved and wear a White Ribbon starting November 25 running until December 6.

Dennis Spencer, one of 30 North Bay White Ribbon members shared his thoughts and aspirations.

“We believe that getting men involved with this message offers the public a different perspective which may help motivate them to speak out against violence against women. It is a man’s responsibility to create awareness too.”

Spencer continued, “The partnership (White Ribbon Campaign) has its own educational kit. We hope to bring this material to many schools in the area in order to conduct annual presentations for students.”

Please contact Dennis Spencer at 474-7773 or P.E.P Place- 497-4774 for more information.

The dates, November 26 to December 6, coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is also the dates which correspond to the Montreal Massacres.

From the CBC Archives, The Montreal Massacre:
-For 45 minutes on Dec. 6, 1989 an enraged gunman roamed the corridors of Montreal's École Polytechnique and killed 14 women. Marc Lepine, 25, separated the men from the women and before opening fire on the classroom of female engineering students he screamed, "I hate feminists." Almost immediately, the Montreal Massacre became a galvanizing moment in which mourning turned into outrage about all violence against women.-

Many people are already aware of the pink, yellow and red ribbons. This year add the white one to your collection.
