Nipissing-Timiskaming Conservatives met at the Clarion Pinewood Park Hotel today to select their candidate for the next federal election.

In the outcome North Bay lawyer Joe Sinicrope defeated Peter Chirico and will represent the Conservatives for Nipissing-Timiskaming in the next federal election.

Sinicrope said he would start knocking on doors tomorrow.

“I will build a new coalition of voters who welcome change,” Sinicrope said.

“It is unacceptable to see young bright minds leaving this city because they can’t find work. I believe the Liberals have squandered 13 years, I believe everyone living in North Bay and the surrounding areas deserve better… I plan to bring back prosperity.”

Sinicrope, was a one-time faithful Liberal who wanted to lead the Grits into the 2004 election.

Both nominees agreed that one thing was certain; one of them must put an end to 20 years of Liberal domination.

735 eligible voters had until 4:15 pm to cast their votes.

Before the federal candidate was announced each party member presented a 30 minute speech.

During his 30 minutes Chirico said, “I wish to bring what I have created on a local level to a national level… 2006 was the first round (referring to his disappointing loss) this is the second round and I am ready to climb back in the ring.”

Chirico plays many roles in North Bay: Deputy Mayor, Chair- police services board, Vice-Chair- Casselholme Board of Management, Member- YMCA Board of Directors and Provincial Board Member- Ontario Association of Children’s’ Rehabilitation Services. These titles merely scratch the surface of his involvement in local affairs.

"I love what I do, and I will continue to work hard for the community." Chirico said.
