Nipissing University is proud to host Chasing Justice, a presentation by Kerry Max Cook, a man who spent 22 years on death row in a Texas prison for a crime he did not commit.

The presentation, organized by Nipissing University’s Criminal Justice student Association, takes place on Wednesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in the Education Centre Gymnasium.

“We are deeply honoured that Mr. Cook has chosen to speak at Nipissing. This is the only scheduled appearance that he is making in Canada and his story is so utterly incredible and moving that it is sure to be an excellent, once-in-a-lifetime presentation,” said fourth-year Criminal Justice student and presentation organizer, Lindsey Pecaric.

The longest tenured death-row prisoner to be freed from a Texas prison, Cook was arrested in August 1977 when he was 21 years old. He was charged with the brutal rape and murder of 21-year-old Linda Jo Edwards, in Tyler, Texas. One year later he was tried, convicted and sentenced to death. Cook spent 22 years in Texas' notorious death house, enduring the most inhumane conditions imaginable. On Friday, April 16, 1999, DNA evidence clearly exonerated Cook of the tragic crime.

Come and listen to the riveting true-life story of how a small town murder became one of the worst cases of prosecutorial misconduct in American history.

Following his release, cook published his story as a book titled Chasing Justice. A book signing will follow the presentation and books will be available for purchase at the door.

Tickets will be available at the door and are being sold outside the Nipissing University library in advance, or you can call 474-3450 ext 4392, or email [email protected]
