There were a number of positive results for Nipissing University in Maclean’s annual University Rankings Issue, the results of which were released today.

In the section of the magazine devoted to student surveys, Nipissing scored very well. The university was ranked first overall in five separate categories: How satisfied are you with the overall quality of the education you have received at this university; How satisfied are you with your decision to attend this university; My academic learning experiences at this university have been intellectually stimulating; Generally, I am satisfied with the quality of teaching I have received; and Has your experience at this university exceeded, met or fallen short of your expectations. Nipissing placed in the top three in eight of the 15 categories. Maclean’s Student Surveys included results from 70,000 students and 28 Canadian universities.

For the second year in a row, Maclean’s used the results of three surveys to create their rankings, the National Survey of Student Engagement, the Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium and Maclean’s University Student Survey.

“These are encouraging results for Nipissing,” said Dr. Dennis Mock, president of Nipissing University. “We strive to provide an excellent university experience for our students. Positive results in surveys like this one and the recent Globe and Mail University Report Card, that gauge student satisfaction, indicate that we are accomplishing our goal. Of course, they are also helpful in showing some areas in which we need to improve.”

In the rankings section of the magazine, Nipissing was ranked low, as expected by university officials. The university was ranked 20 out of 21 schools in the Primarily Undergraduate category. Nipissing did score in the top ten, however, in categories relating to Student Support, specifically in Scholarships and Bursaries, and Student Services.

This year, to create the rankings, Maclean’s used publicly available data gleaned from a number of sources including the universities’ web sites, the Common University Data Ontario, Statistics Canada and federal granting agencies.

“That section of Maclean’s is structured in a way that significantly favours older, long established universities that have built their reputation. While these surveys and rankings are useful, in reality they are simply another tool available to students for choosing the university that best fits their post-secondary goals and we encourage students to take advantage of all the tools at their disposal in making their choice for post-secondary education.”
