Pet rescuer's faith in humanity restored

Just a week after Charlotte Pepin found rescued over two dozen abandoned black cats on a back road in Chisholm, she says her faith in humanity has been restored.

Pepin says at one point her house was overrun with 25 of the abandoned cats and between Thursday and Sunday they were able to place 21 of the cats.

“Three went to Pet Save in Sudbury … They were the most feral ones,” she notes.

“There is one cat left ... a pregnant female that will be fostered here with us until she has her kittens. She is a lovely affectionate girl and I have a feeling she may end up staying with us permanently, but we will see how she gets along with our own cat and dogs first.”

The frazzled pet rescuer did say that she doesn’t anticipate a new search once the litter arrives as she has a list of people interested in the kittens.

She also notes that Pet Save is a no kill organisation so they will socialize and place the feral cats in foster homes for now. As well she notes that the extra donations of food and litter were given to organisation and what is left of the money donations will be used to spay momma cat when her kittens are weaned.

Pepin credits the local media for taking up her plight by generating a great deal of interest and in turn finding homes for the felines.

“I am extremely pleased with the outcome and would love to have the opportunity to thank the people of North Bay and outlying areas for opening their hearts and homes to these cats and for their generosity,” she states.

“This experience has given me renewed faith in people. I was amazed that we found homes for almost all of them. My phone was ringing off the hook at times with inquires, kudos and adoption offers.”

According to neighbours there are still 2 or 3 cats running free and attempts to trap them have been fruitless, but one thing is for sure Pepin firmly stands behind the message Bob Barker parted with at the end of every Price is Right episode.

“After seeing firsthand what NOT spaying and neutering can do, I really hope that all the new cat owners will do their part by spaying and neutering their new friends.”
