Cementation has recently achieved a significant milestone in North American mining. Without incident, first aid, medical aid, or lost time injury the North Bay based mine contracting and engineering firm completed work on the longest and largest diameter raise ever bored in the Canadian Shield.

The project, a contract for Goldcorp’s Red Lake Gold Mines in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada, has resulted in a bored raise that is 694 metres (2,275 feet) long & 5.52 metres (18.11 feet) in diameter.

“Delivering the potential of larger diameter bored raises to our Clients provides them with new options for mine access and ventilation systems.” Cementation President Roy Slack said.

The raise boring records are:

1. Longest 380mm/15in diameter pilot hole of; 694m/2,275ft.
2. Longest 5.52m/18.11ft diameter raise of; 694m/2,275ft.
3. Largest volume for a bored raise of more than 52,000 tons.

Cementation completed the second raise directly over their first record setting raise completed early in 2007, making the combined length of the 5.52m/18.11ft diameter vent raise 1010m/3,315ft long.

Cementation, a division of Murray & Roberts, is a mine contracting and engineering company that specialises in the development and construction of underground hard rock mines and related facilities. Recently recognised as one of the Top 100 Employers in Canada for the second consecutive year, Cementation is also recognised as the most active mine shaft contractor in North America.

“We are very proud of our crews for completing this project without injury. Our corporate vision of change is based on eliminating injuries in our industry, and this project is another example of how zero injuries is achievable,” Slack stated.

Cementation operates the 2 largest raise bore machines in North America, which are part of Murray & Robert’s 44 machine fleet.
