On Wednesday, November 7th Near North Grade Nine students from across the district will spend the day at work as they participate in the 13th Annual National ‘Take Our Kids to Work’ Day

The Take Our Kids to Work program enables the entire community - parents, teachers and workplaces - to play an important role in the career development of young Canadians.

How do students benefit from this program?

• Learn skills required in today’s workplaces.
• Create the opportunity for career discussion with adults about the work they do.
• Make the connections between education and their future career.
• Obtain a better understanding of the complexity of career choices and the benefits of early exploration.
• Explore career options in a “hands on” and practical way.
• Understand the importance of staying in school and getting a high school diploma.
• Appreciate their parent’s role in making a living and supporting their family.

On ‘Take Our Kids to Work Day,’ students go behind the scenes at the workplace. A few of the careers students will explore include skilled trades, health care, marketing, teaching, retail, and information technology. Large and small businesses can participate by demonstrating the many varied skills required in their workplace.

The Near North District School Board encourages students and community workplaces alike to participate in this valuable program. Dez Collins, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Leader, for the Near North District School Board, comments that “the workplace provides students with a realistic opportunity to discover their unique skills and interests and how they can be applied to a chosen career.”

The Near North District School Board appreciates the support our community partners provide for all experiential learning opportunities.
