The North Bay Police Service has been recently been made aware of a local fraud on the internet.

This fraud has a group calling themselves “Deaf World Group” and is appearing on chat lines where some people are getting confused with the legitimate organization Canadian Hearing Society.

This “Deaf World Group” then advises an individual to answer a skill testing question which everyone passes. The individual is then sent a cheque in the name of “Infotel Distributors from Fletcher Ohio” and a further request is made to cash this cheque and send part of the money to a second individual.

Once this transaction is fully completed it is now evident that the citizen is now on the hook for the false cheque that has been cashed in the first place and the actual money that has been sent to the second individual.

Our Police Service and the legitimate organization Canadian Hearing Society is warning the public to be on guard for this type of scam and to contact either your local Police Service or the Canadian Hearing Society should this happen to you.
