The Near North District School Board continues it’s Leadership Series on Tuesday, October 30th at Widdifield Secondary School from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Near North staff interested in becoming a Vice Principal, Principal, Program Coordinator or taking on any leadership role within the board will be enlightened Tuesday evening by Keynote Speaker Dr. Christopher Spence. A central theme for the evening is “Believe You Can”.

Dr. Spence is Director of Education at Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. With over 15 years of senior administration and teaching experience, he is widely recognized for his past and present leadership roles. He played professional football before becoming a teacher.

Chris Spence’s accomplishments as a Principal at Lawrence Heights Middle School in Toronto are highlighted in the book “Harbors of Hope – The Planning for School and Student Success Process”, (2005). He embraced the challenge of making a difference in a tough school community where crime rates were high and the school’s reputation was bad. “My mission as principal is to bring a vision of dynamic and collaborative leadership to the challenge of public education. The intent of this vision is to build and maintain strong relationships and to encourage commitment and loyalty through trust, growth through participation, and responsibility through accountability. My primary function as the principal is to continually acquire – as well as continually teach those being guided, individually and collectively – the attitudes, belief, values, knowledge, and skills that facilitate success and move student and staff to higher levels of performance.”

Dr. Spence has received many awards for his outstanding contributions to education and the community, including outstanding alumni award from Simon Fraser University, Positive Impact Award and Canadian Black Achievement Award for Professional Achievement and Community Leadership. He was recognized by the City of Toronto for best practices in education and by the community group, Why we are Here, for outstanding educational contributions.
