Commander reminds folks that safety comes first this Halloween

Noelville - Noelville OPP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Tim Foster would like to remind all drivers to use extreme caution on Halloween night as all the excitement of going door to door can cause children to forget safety rules. When driving in areas with children, slow down and watch for them. Enter and exit alleyways and driveways slowly.

Parents should ensure their children’s costumes are bright and fit properly, to prevent tripping and falling. Should your child be dressed in dark clothing, attach fluorescent tape for more visibility.

If your child wears a mask, make sure the eyeholes are big enough to see clearly.

Have your child carry a flashlight or glow stick. Attach the glow sticks to their costumes and inside their bags.
Make sure your children walk, not run, from house to house and that they stay on the side of the road facing traffic. Should they have to cross the road, make sure they know to look both ways and to cross at intersections when traffic is clear.

Remind your children not to talk to strangers or to accept rides from anyone they do not know or recognize and not to enter any strange homes.

Have your child bring all treats home and instruct them to refrain from consuming any of them, until you have thoroughly inspected them. Homemade candy and unwrapped treats should be thrown out.

Be a good citizen – Don’t do tricks or vandalism if you don’t get a treat.

Report vandalism or fires, to the Police or an adult.
Watch out for others. Help smaller children if they need assistance.

Members of the OPP will be out on foot patrols throughout the municipalities to ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and Happy Halloween.
