North Bay Police and Ministry of Natural Resource officials were called to the area of J.W. Trusler School early this morning to investigate a report of bears in the area. The principal, Scott Dunn, was contacted at his home and immediately began a safe action plan.

The local radio station alerted the public. Staff was deployed around the school area and on nearby street intersections to escort and direct the walking children into the school. Buses were met by school staff and children were safely guided from the bus into the school.

The adult bear was determined to be a danger and was shot. At the time of this release two bear cubs were tranquilized and removed from a tree. The MNR continues to work on their safe removal of a third bear cub from the tree.

“City police, MNR and staff at J.W. Trusler Public school are to be commended for their effective communication and prompt reaction to this situation,” said Patrick Bocking, Superintendent of Schools and Program for the Near North District School Board.
