On October 17 at 5p.m. in front of North Bay City Hall Reverend Terry O’Connor is hosting Stand Up, Speak Out to Make Poverty History.

“This event is a worldwide movement to entice political leaders to start making the right policies and decisions to end poverty,” O’Connor said.

Stand up Speak out has set four goals: better aid, trade justice, canceling the debts of impoverished nations and child poverty.

O’Connor said the goal to end child poverty was added by Canadian representatives.

“We will be wearing white bands to show our support… What happens is, people will congregate at 5p.m. then at about 5:30p.m. we will have participants take a seat.”

“We will then proceed with a countdown from 10 to zero at which time all participants will rise as a symbol of taking a stand to end poverty.”

The numbers will then be recorded and sent to Ottawa and added to the national and worldwide numbers.

Mayor Vic Fedeli said he supports the cause and urged other council members to show up and represent the city and support the cause.
