Three northern Ontario men have been fined after pleading guilty to their roles in illegally hunting and killing a bull moose.

John Van Leeuwen Jr., 37, of Sudbury, has been fined $2,500 and is banned from hunting for one year after pleading guilty to illegally shooting and transporting a bull moose. His father, John Van Leeuwen Sr., 69, and Claude Quenneville, 39, both of Field, were convicted of transporting illegally harvested wildlife and were each fined $500.

Court was told that on October 8, 2005, conservation officers received a call on the MNR TIPS line about abandoned moose remains in Bastedo Township north of Field. The men were charged as a result of the investigation.

Justice of the Peace Norman Ross heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on July 12, 2007.
The ministry reminds the public that hunting limits and seasons are in place to maintain a sustainable moose population.
