The 2nd Annual Awards to encourage, motivate, support and reward Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) graduates were recently handed out.

Angela Johnston, a regular contributor to BayToday.ca not only supplied the following article but also is the Benefactor of the Young Entrepreneurship Program Awards.

“The awards are presented annually to support the program, help encourage economic development in our community though our youth and show our youth that I lead by example not just words,” says Johnston.

Jenn Galan, YEP Co-ordinator, Pat Aspin-Lecour NECO and Angela Johnston, Benefactor presented the 2nd Annual Awards to encourage, motivate, support and reward graduates to become our further business and community leaders. The lead by example annual award was present to four outstanding students from the 2006 - 2007 graduating classes. New Award the Coordinator's Choice Award was presented to Ben Dick, owner of iambendick who has over the past 3 years encompasses all the qualities of a young entrepreneur. The Angela Johnston Lead the Way Award given to the YEP participant who shows exceptional leadership skills presented to Louise Warren, owner of Awake. The Angela Johnston Endless Possibilities Award given to the YEP participant who shows continued progress in their business endeavour presented to Russ Collins, owner Power Stance Merchandise and The Angela Johnston Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award given to the YEP participant who has successfully created a sustainable business present to Eric Boutiller owner of Flic Media.

This year’s winners also received Certificates of Achievement from the House of Commons & Anthony Rota M.P. Nipissing-Timiskaming wishing them continued success and thanked them for their contribution to our community.

Recognition and awarded for their growth where presented to Sherry Milford owner of Piebird Bed and Breakfast, Alex Gagnon owner of Northern Media Duplication, Jody Baillie owner of Almaguin Cardiac Monitoring Services, and Sheryl Lavallee owner of Clean House North Bay.

The NECO Young Entrepreneur Program selects up to twenty-seven youth per year to participate in this unique program. The forty-week program offers each participant the opportunity to learn how to create a successful business, by exposing them to top notch facilitators, linking them with mentors from the business community, building self-esteem and confidence, and providing Expertise in business plan development, and loan procurement.

Each participate must meet basic eligibility for the program, and must also have experienced barriers that previously disable them from securing success and stability. Participates face barriers that can be absolutely devastating, and debilitating. The objective of the Young Entrepreneurship Program is to promote self-sufficiency in the labour market through self-employment. The program provides financial assistance and management training for persons eligible for the program who want to start their own business. Priority will be given to those individuals who demonstrate a sound business idea, long term self employment potential, management skills, good profit potential and economic benefits to the community.

The Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) is funded by Human Resources Skills Development Canada and administered by NECO, which has been delivering the program since 1999.
