The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)acknowledges and commends First Nations people for the integrity and respect they brought to the many peaceful activities organized across Ontario as part of the National Day of Action.

An unprecedented level of planning and cooperation in Ontario among First Nation communities, law enforcement partners and others contributed to the many notable events that provided a positive opportunity for Canadians to gain a better understanding of aboriginal issues. The OPP also maintained close communication with the leadership of the 134 First Nation communities in Ontario to ensure that events proceeded in a respectful and safe environment for everyone involved.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) designated the National Day of Action as an opportunity to focus attention on the need for fair agreements and to respectfully build bridges with Canadians. AFN National Chief Phil Fontaine and the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) Regional Chief Angus Toulouse are to be recognized for their efforts to call attention to aboriginal issues and to make this day a peaceful success.

OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino also thanks the general public for their understanding as events unfolded across the province on June 29. "While there were temporary disruptions and inconvenience, people showed tolerance and
patience which reflects well on everyone committed to the greater good."
