July 1st, 2007 brings about the 140th birthday of Canada and the 60th year of Canadian citizenship.

To celebrate this monumental occasion, the North Bay Canada Day Committee initiated a school wide poster challenge. The theme for the first annual Canada Day poster challenge was 'A Portrait of Canada'.

The Committee invited students at area elementary schools to illustrate how the people, places, and events of the past 140 years have shaped our nation. Jack Daley, a grade six student at St. Gregory’s was the winner of the first annual Canada Day Poster challenge. During the Canada Day opening ceremonies on July 1st, Jack’s poster will be formally presented to the public.

The Canada Day festivities will kick off at twelve noon at the Waterfront A.C.T. shelter with the singing of O’Canada and the official cake cutting ceremonies hosted by the Association of Canadian Travellers and the Clarion Resort Pinewood Park.

Two new events, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nipissing and the North Bay Newcomer Network, will fill the afternoon at the Kiwanis Bandshell. Beginning at 1:00 p.m., a special ceremony of reaffirmation of Canadian citizenship will commemorate the 60th year of Canadian citizenship. Following the ceremony, local performers will share their cultural traditions via music, song, and dance. The multiculturalism showcase will feature performers such as Mabel and Orlando, Aboriginal drumming, fiddling and step dancing, and much more!

The afternoon's agenda of events also includes a wide range of supervised sporting activities for children hosted by KidSport, food vendors, and of course the Heritage Railway Train and carousel rides.

A Fireworks Finale will complete the celebration at 10:00 p.m. on the North Bay waterfront. The “Fox Rocks the Boat” Fireworks cruise is scheduled to depart at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $18.00 each and can be purchased at the Chief Ticket office on the Government Dock or by calling 494-8167.
