The North Bay Newcomer Network has partnered with the Canada Day committee to organize culturally focused events for the annual celebration. As part of their stated goals, this partnership will enable the volunteer committee to raise the awareness of diversity within the city and to create visibility for the many multicultural groups that live here.

To celebrate the fact that Canadians come from a mosaic of cultures and in celebration of the 60th year of Canadian citizenship, a special ceremony of reaffirmation of Canadian citizenship will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Bandshell on the waterfront on July 1st. This ceremony is an opportunity for all Canadians to reaffirm their commitment to Canada by repeating the Oath of Citizenship. Remarks will be given by local dignitaries and special guests will be present on stage. Ursina Rusch, a local newcomer, will also talk about her reasons for choosing Canada and her vision for a multicultural Canada. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Those who do participate will be presented with a reaffirmation certificate as a souvenir of the event.

The reaffirmation ceremony will be followed by a Multicultural Showcase, an afternoon of cultural entertainment featuring local performers. The performances begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Kiwanis Bandshell. From energetic and infectious Latin dancing with Mabel and Orlando to the unifying and powerful Aboriginal drum circle, audiences will experience a taste of the many cultural heritages and traditions that exist within the city. Performances are scheduled all afternoon, wrapping up around 4:30 p.m. Both events are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nipissing.

Canada is a vibrant, diverse country that we have all built and continue to build together. On the 140th birthday of our country and the 60th year of Canadian citizenship, we invite each member of our community to come and celebrate with us!

These events are part of the official Canada Day celebrations. For more information about the other great events happening, please contact 474-0626, ext 335 or 338. Local media are encouraged to attend and resources will be provided.
