OPP continue to investigate the circumstances involved in the fatal high-speed mid morning accident on Highway 400 Monday that left one man dead and saw traffic stopped in both directions all day.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred at 11:30am Monday when two male drivers in their early 20’s, one from Mississauga and the other from Etobicoke, where speeding on their way to Wasaga Beach for a break between final exams yesterday.

Reports further suggest that the vehicles caused the truck driver to swerve, hitting the centre median and then cross three lanes of traffic and into a ditch. The 50-year-old truck driver, who lost his life, is being hailed a hero as witnesses say the man sacrificed himself in order to save others.

Two drivers each face five charges, including criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing injury and bodily harm and dangerous driving by racing. While a third driver, a 21-year-old male of a green Honda was charged with dangerous driving.

Tyler Langlois, who was travelling back to North Bay with his wife, reached the scene after the horrific accident and just as emergency crews were arriving on site.

“Hopefully today's tragedy will help some people realize that 'street racing' can have very serious consequences,” Langlois tells BayToday.ca.

The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of his next of kin have been notified.

OPP say they are treating the investigation as if it were a homicide.
