Astorville - Children in North Bay are getting their tackle sorted and their fishing line detangled in preparation for the annual Kids Fishing Derby! Hosted by the Nosbonsing Get Outdoors Club and Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Days, this event will take place on Sunday June 24th at the Government Dock on Big Moose Road, Lake Nosbonsing.

The festivities begin at 12 noon and run until 3:00 pm with a cost of $5.00 per angler. Children are asked to bring their life jackets, as well as fishing equipment, sunscreen and water to stay hydrated. The Nosbonsing OFAH will be available to take the kids on the water to see what they might catch out there. Participants are asked to contact Joanne St. Denis in advance to arrange this. In addition to all the fishing fun, the young anglers can look forward to cash prizes for the longest fish in three age categories: 7 and under, 8 to 12, and 12 and older. OPP officers from the Marine Unit and SAVE team will also be at the event ready to help the young anglers.

This event is part of an exciting grassroots program to encourage youngsters to enjoy the benefits of recreational fishing supported by The Nosbonsing Get Outdoors Club, North Bay OPP, Fishing Forever, Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Days, The Police Association of Ontario (PAO), and Canadian Tire.

According to Real Fishing's Bob Izumi, spokesperson for Fishing Forever, it makes sense that North Bay Police Officers are involved with such an event. "Children look up to those in uniform and in turn the officers spend their entire careers teaching and protecting children," states Izumi. "The Astorville event is a perfect way for kids to learn that these dedicated men and women care about them as individuals." Izumi's late father Joe enjoyed introducing children to fishing and, as a result, Bob has taken up the cause of using recreational fishing as a way to bring families closer and teach important life lessons to children.
