Today, the Near North District School Board was pleased to learn that $18.7 million will be provided for the replacement of the Almaguin Highlands Secondary School facility. The Board has sought funding to replace the building as it faced significant repair costs over time and create a new Almaguin Highland education centre to serve the Almaguin Highlands region of the Board. Minister of Education, Kathleen Wynne and Monique Smith, M.P.P., attended an assembly at the high school. After acknowledging the efforts of the students and school community to raise money to build a school in a developing country, Minister Wynne made the “grand announcement” that money would be forthcoming to replace the current building.

Municipal representatives and members of the community were present to hear the news and greeted it with enthusiasm.

The Board will move directly to develop a plan for construction. It is expected that advice will be sought from students, staff and community members about the design. In its proposal to the Ministry, the Board had underlined the opportunities to work with community partners like local municipalities, agencies and Canadore College in order to provide education, training and services for the area. The Board recognizes the role it can play in the vitality of the Almaguin Highlands.

More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available and plans are developed.
