Toronto – Matt Caruso and Jon Brown of Chippewa Secondary School, North Bay are the co-winners of the North Bay CA District Association’s 2007 edition of COIN: The CA Challenge. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario held its annual competition on May 8 to give high school students considering a career as a Chartered Accountant the opportunity to compete, have fun and earn some cash prizes.

“COIN is a popular Institute initiative to encourage students to consider becoming a Chartered Accountant,” said Jon French, Associate Director, Career Information at the Institute. “This year almost 500 students from 153 high schools in 19 districts participated in this highly competitive contest.”

As the winners of the local prizes offered by CA District Associations across the province, Matt and Jon won $100 and were presented with certificates of achievement. Two other Chippewa students were also honoured: Rebecca Duguay, who came in second in the district, and Shannon Hueston, who took third place.

The Institute also announced the top contest winners from across Ontario. The first place prize provincially is $1,500, with the two students who tied for second place getting $1,000 each.

The Ontario-wide winners are:

- 1st Place All Ontario:
Chang Xu, Bell High School, Nepean

- 2nd place All Ontario (tie):
Kelsey Letang, John McCrae Secondary School,
Nepean Venus Lo, Unionville High School, Markham

To win, the students competed by answering 75-questions at the premises of a firm employing CAs. Think it’s easy? Would you know:

- How to assess inventory market value according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)?

- The principles of revenue recognition?

- How to assess depreciation?
The 2007 winners knew all that and more.

All of the participants receive a certificate of participation and a chance to find out more about the exciting opportunities offered by a career as a Chartered Accountant.
