Sturgeon Falls — An Amherstview man has been fined $3,000 after pleading guilty to shooting and abandoning a cow moose in Crerar Township, just south of River Valley.
Court was told that on October 11, 2006, Michel Cardinal, 39, unintentionally shot and killed a cow moose, but rather than report the mistake to the Ministry of Natural Resources so the meat could be salvaged, he abandoned it to spoil in the bush.

Justice of the Peace Gilles Lecouteur heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Sturgeon Falls, on May 14, 2007.

The ministry reminds the public that if they commit an offence they should contact the ministry as soon as possible. Officers will often take prompt disclosure and mitigating circumstances into account in deciding whether to lay charges.

To report a natural resource violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
