NOCC In support of Northern Ontario Growth Plan

Timmins - On Thursday May 17th, the McGuinty government announced a plan that will designate Northern Ontario as a “Place to Grow” .The NOCC had advocated strongly for this initiative that will enable the government to move forward with a multi faceted, Inter-Ministerial initiative to enable Northern Ontario to grow it’s economy and indeed, in many cases transition some of our traditional industry towards economic prosperity.

The NOCC believes that this will stimulate new investment and business opportunities to the region thereby building stronger communities with the kind of housing, health care and educational facilities, transportation infrastructure and quality of life that Northern residents want and deserve.

"The Places to Grow announcement represents an important milestone for the future of Northern Ontario's economic success. Having a plan for growth is critical to the enhancement and indeed, transformation of some sectors of our economy moving forward. I commend Minister Bartolucci and his Northern caucus for their success in drawing the government's attention to the North with such a meaningful and aggressive initiative. The NOCC looks forward to working with Ministers Caplan and Bartolucci to develop this economic blueprint for the North.” commented Steve Kidd, NOCC Chair.“

“The Northeastern Ontario Chamber of Commerce has been actively calling upon the government to bring the Places to Grow initiative North and indeed they are delivering, “he continued.

The initiatives inherent to the “Growth Plan” include achieving, maintaining and sustaining economic prosperity within our region thereby creating economic and lifestyle opportunities that will encourage youth to remain in the North, to continue to live in the North, and work and raise their families in the North. The Growth Plan for Northern Ontario will provide the vehicle to foster economic development and align infrastructure planning and investment and NOCC is pleased to work with the ministries on the plan going forward.
