Students urge school board to go green

Near North District School Board Trustees received a quick lesson on the environment from some eager grade 4 students during the regular monthly meeting Tuesday.

The students from Vincent Massey Public School were at the meeting promoting their upcoming Environment Fair.

When asked the students didn’t hesitate to tell Trustee David Thompson what the board should be doing when it comes to the board going green.

“You should be teaching about global warming,” states on student.

“You should be recycling,” chimes in another.

Director of Education Collin Vickers was happy to inform the trustees moving forward that the board was expanding their blue box program.

“Actually we have a lot of recycling going on, but we need to be more consistent and involve all of our schools at a higher level,” Vickers tells BayToday.

“So we’ve just had a small step forward in that regard and we’re going to make sure everyone has the blue boxes they need. The City of North Bay seem very cooperative around making sure they’ll pick up 10 boxes worth of recyclables on the regular collection day.”

Vickers says beyond the blue box program the board is now looking at the provincial Eco-school strategy.

The Enviornment Fair is open to the public and takes place at Vincent Massey Public School, 15 Janey Avenue Thursday May 24th from 9:30am to 3pm.
