The North East Region Ontario Provincial Police take on the challenge of making roadways safer places to travel with a triple focus on Aggressive Driving, Impaired Driving and Seat Belt Use.

Today’s official kick-off in Sudbury was an excellent starting point for Canada Road Safety Week (May 15-21), and drew public attention to traffic issues and summer-long, 24/7 OPP enforcement. These campaigns not only create public awareness but also increase a drivers' sense of risk as to possible enforcement action. The OPP urge motorists to consider their driving habits and commit to changing behaviours that put themselves and their family’s lives at risk.

Last summer, across the North East Region, there were 23 collisions in which 31 people were killed (Victoria Day Weekend to Labour Day Weekend). Speeding, speed too fast for conditions, following too closely, improper lane changes, improper passing, disobeying traffic control and failing to yield the right of way factors significantly in terms of the collisions investigated by the OPP.

“Drivers must slow down and everyone must buckle up,” states Inspector Mark Andrews. “The problem of aggressive driving and the devastating consequences, in terms of personal injury and death, can only be reduced when drivers recognize their own poor habits and commit to changing them.”

Aggressive driving is all about driver attitude and speeding is by far the most prevalent aggressive driving behaviour. From it stems other poor driving habits. Drivers who travel at speeds far in excess of the norm most often follow too closely, change lanes frequently and abruptly without signalling and pass on the shoulder or unpaved portions of the roadway.

“The Ontario Provincial Police is on patrol to ensure that you and your family remain safe,” explains Chief Superintendent Ken Miller, Regional Commander – North East Region. “Our goal is for fatality free Victoria Day weekend. Please make it your goal too – slow down and let patience be your guide.”

PLEASE, DRIVE SOBER FOR A SAFE SUMMER!
