Students, at Near North schools across the district, are following in the footsteps of Terry Fox, as they walk for cancer research in the 2nd Annual Terry Fox School Run Day. Last year, more than 36 schools raised a staggering total of $42,013.89. Even more schools are expected to participate in this year’s event, and an early tally indicates great results so far.

Numerous schools will be participating in the national walk tomorrow, Friday, September 29, 2006. For logistical reasons, a few schools have already walked, or will be holding their events next week. F.J. McElligott Secondary School in Mattawa already held their walk and raised $302.92; M.T. Davidson Public School in Callander raised $225.25 and South Shore Education Centre in Nipissing raised approximately $300. Northern Secondary School in Sturgeon Falls is holding their event on October 6 and hopes to contribute $600.00.

Primary students at McDougall Public School in Parry Sound walked their track on September 15 and raised $462.50. The staff and “students were very excited to run around the track, just like Terry Fox,” claimed a grade one student at McDougall.

School fundraising results will be released in April, 2007 when final figures are submitted to the Board by the Terry Fox Foundation.

The Near North District School Board is extremely proud of all staff, students and volunteers who are participating in the Terry Fox School Run Day. The Board looks forward all of its schools participating in next year’s event.
