They Say What Hit Nipissing and Manitoulin Wasn't a Tornado

A tornado hit Newmarket, Ontario on Monday night.

But whatever it was that struck North Bay, Mattawa, Callander, Larder Lake, Verner, French River, Sturgeon Falls and Manitoulin Island, it wasn't a tornado.

At least, that's the preliminary finding of Environment Canada.

The following statement was issued today by the weather agency:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN REGARDS TO STORMS ON MONDAY JULY 17TH.

DUE TO THE NUMBER OF AREAS WHICH RECEIVED DAMAGE FROM THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS ONTARIO ON MONDAY, JULY 17TH, THIS STORM SUMMARY IS MEANT TO REFLECT AREAS WHICH RECEIVED THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AS SURVEYED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA PERSONNEL UP TO JULY 20TH.

THE INVESTIGATION WILL CONTINUE OVER THE COMING DAYS IN ORDER TO CATEGORIZE AND GET A MORE COMPLETE IDEA OF THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE DOWN BY THE STORMS ON JULY 17.

OF PARTICULAR NOTE IS THAT THE DAMAGE TRACK FROM
MANITOULIN ISLAND TO SOUTHWEST OF LAKE NIPISSING THROUGH NORTH BAY AND EASTWARDS TO MATTAWA AND DEEP RIVER AND INTO THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC REPRESENTS AN INTERMITTENT PATH OF DAMAGE OVER 400 KILOMETRES IN LENGTH.
