Green Keys Tour - Frank Horvat coming to the Bay By Robert Palangio BayToday.ca Wednesday, April 14, 2010 . Pianist and composer Frank Horvat is touring Canada to promote his new CD, A Little Dark Music, while putting the planet in the light. The Green Keys Tour was launched on March 27, 2010 at The Assembly Hall in Toronto and will arrive in North Bay on Saturday, May 1st at Brava Music Studio. Concert time is 7pm and admission is free.
What do you feel emotionally when you’re in the darkness? Do you feel a moment of clarity, with no visual distractions, that allows you to think about deeper issues in your life?" These are questions that Toronto-based award-winning, critically acclaimed composer, pianist, and music educator, Frank Horvat is exploring through the sound of music; and that is the heart behind Horvat’s nation-wide promotional Green Keys Tour for A Little Dark Music - his new CD that's putting the planet in the light. The Green Keys Tour is a yearlong, 50+ city, piano concert tour opening on the day of Earth Hour this month.
Like many artists, Mr. Horvat's craft has become a way of giving back to the earth. Horvat's original music is influenced by the post-modern idea of eclecticism. His portfolio of compositions demonstrates a variety of musical styles: wildly original, often chaotic, and his influences run the range from Bach to Beethoven to Bartók to Bjork.
Featuring four introspective tracks with an ambient tone, A Little Dark Music explores real world themes like the environment, poverty, Sept 11th, and also features an hour-long composition entitled Earth Hour which explores the introspective side of darkness. The 60-minute continuous composition was not only inspired by, but will also be performed in, the dark (awesome). “My goal was to create a soundscape that would bring peace, joy and contentment for listeners through sombre themes.” says Horvat. Dedicated to Earth Hour, 25% of the proceeds from the sales of A Little Dark Music will be donated to WWF-Canada. “The Green Keys Tour will deliver a unique musical presentation featuring a mix of musical styles and original piano music that tell deeply personal stories."
Horvat has worked to make sure no admission fee is charged for any of the concerts. How can it get any better than free? The tour will be as environmentally low-impact as possible, in hopes of setting an example for other musicians. “I want everything I’m doing in the tour to act as an example of how people can still pursue their dreams and ambitions without hurting Mother Nature in the process.” explains Horvat. The tour is both sponsored and entirely powered by Bullfrog. You won't find any printed programs at the concerts, and A Little Dark Music’s CD case is printed on 100% recycled stock using vegetable inks. Also forget dirty, polluting tour buses (sorry groupies), Frank's committed to traveling only using public transit for the entirety of the tour. Big up man. Bring on the birth of eco-concerts!
