Flġrida: a Feast of Flowers By Robert Palangio BayToday.ca Monday, May 26, 2008
Throughout the month of June, the Joan Ferneyhough Gallery will play host to a collective display of art entitled Flġrida: a Feast of Flowers. Pictured above is Pat Clemes's Spring Pansies, 2007 (14 x 22 watercolour on paper).
Flowers have always been a beloved and compelling subject of artists. They are beautiful, mysterious, provocative and beguiling. Over the centuries individual flowers have come to hold their own meaning. For example, the pansy means thought, the iris, message and the yellow water-lily, growing indifference. During the Victorian era, flowers were often sent as coded messages. While this practice is no longer prevalent, the language of flowers continues, especially in art.
Artists Pat Clemes, Ted Fullerton, Judy Gouin and Tom Lapierre use flowers to convey emotion, narrative, concept and metaphor in referencing the human condition.
The exhibition begins with an opening reception on Saturday May 31st from 11am to 2pm (general public invited) and continues to Thursday, July 3rd.
The gallery is located at 157 First Avenue East in North Bay and is generally open Tuesdays to Thursdays, most Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. It can also be opened by appointment by calling 476-1534.
