Opinion: Operation Winter Socks marching on!

So don’t wait, it’s not too late for you to donate. Join our local heroes and hockey kids battle against the forces of winter and wet, frozen feet

We’re in the final stretch of Operation Winter Socks and it’s not too late for you to help our local rescue heroes! This community donation effort, on behalf of the North Bay Crisis Centre, the Gathering Place and the local Facebook volunteer group ‘Boots on the Ground’ is still in full swing until Monday, Feb 3.

Last week our police, fire and military personnel began collecting donations from their members and families of winter boots, socks and other items for our local homeless and those in need (see list, below). Our media friends at Your TV and BayToday then helped to spread the word to the North Bay community and the word is that good things are happening in our city!

Since then, over 25 pairs of used or new winter boots, boxes of socks, 10 Hooded sweatshirts, and several boxes of other winter items, food, and toiletries have been donated to Op Winter Socks.

We also have two new community partners/public drop off locations; 106.3 the Moose FM radio station and the Social Café. Donations can also be dropped off at The Gathering Place, The North Bay Crisis Centre (Cassells), and Partner’s Billiards and Bowling Alley until Feb 3.

In a completely unrelated donation initiative but one definitely deserving of mention, the North Bay Peewee AA Minor Trappers hockey team collected almost 500 pairs of winter socks for the North Bay Warming Centre since Dec 19. Wow, great job team and very inspiring!

Tomorrow, Friday, January 31, starting at 7 p.m., Boots on the Ground is having its monthly ‘care package’ creation night at Partner’s Billiards & Bowling. The public is encouraged to come on out and help or to just say hello and meet the volunteers of this outreach group of caring individuals who are making a difference in our community.

So don’t wait, it’s not too late for you to donate. Join our local heroes and hockey kids battle against the forces of winter and wet, frozen feet. Even if you don’t have anything to give… don’t despair, just give this effort a like and a share, and that will show your community how much you care! ;)

Donations of Winter Boots, socks and other items can be dropped off at Partners Billiards & Bowling, 106.3 the Moose FM, & the Social Café, all located downtown.
