Special Constable Ian Shago speaks with members of the public during Police Week at the Northgate Shopping Centre.

Ian Shago feels that becoming a special constable has given him a different perspective on policing.

"Working alongside the constables has given me a real appreciation for what they offer and bring to our community," he said.

"The difficult job they have and how well they do it."

Shago, who grew up in North Bay made an occupation change past his 50th birthday as close to two years ago the 54-year-old left his job as a baillif to become a special constable with the North Bay Police Service.

"For me it was the opportunity to take some of the experience and qualities that I had developed earlier in life and put them to use," he explained.

"I think for me it is the variety the job offers and the variety of situations it puts you in. Dealing with the public and hopefully being able to make some difference in people's lives."

Shago was one of several constables and special constables at Northgate Shopping Centre representing the North Bay Police Service. The service was set up in a storefront near the east entrance as part of Police Week across Ontario.

The North Bay Police Service is using the event as an opportunity to recruit. The North Bay Police is seeking more special constables.

Constable Merv Shantz, corporate communications officer with the North Bay Police Service says they are hiring all age categories for special constable from applicants as young as 20 to applicants hitting 50 years of age.

"The Special Constable program has really grown over the last few years as they have increased the court security process and also we've got a number of special constables that work at headquarters."

Shantz believes it can become part of the police development process too.

"It's a good stepping stone too, so if you're looking at a job in law enforcement and you're not too sure it's something you want.

"A special constable is a position where you can learn about the job and work with officers."

Shago is glad he risked changing occupations to become a special constable.

"Don't hesitate giving it some consideration and reach out to us we are more than willing to give them a more in-depth idea of what is involved," said Shago.

"There are all kinds of people out there who have great qualities they can bring to the table."
